COMMON MARC RECORDS AND ITS IMPORTANCE/USAGE WHILE CATALOGING IN “KOHA” INTEGRATED LIBRARY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM.
It has been observe during my training session that most of the LIS professional do not know about the MARC fields which are commonly used in Cataloging in Koha. Many Library Professionals have not had an opportunity to take formal courses explaining the important topic of library automation and the role of MARC. This document will explain in the simplest way about MARC and it’s usages in cataloging. In Pakistan a majority of LIS professional are not familiar with the MARC tags.
About MARC
MARC means Machine Readable Cataloging Records. A machine-readable means that a computer can read and interpret the data in the cataloging records. The cataloging records mean a bibliographic records or the information traditionally shown on a catalog card. .
Important of MARC Record
MARC is an international standard for cataloging of book data. It’s widely used in all kind of libraries all over the world. Using MARC standards enables libraries to make use commercially or Open source software to manage library day to day works. We could not devise our own method of organizing the bibliographic information. If we do not follow the standard for cataloging our library will be isolate and we would create more work for our self. This document will provide a great assistant to all those LIS professional who are willing to know about marc it’s important:

Sher Afzal Khan is currently working as Chief Librarian Bahria Town Pvt Ltd. He is also approved trainer of Higher Education Commission Pakistan of Koha and Dspace and organized different workshop at Islamabad and Lahore through HEC platform. He also organized a large number of workshops (More than 57) for librarian in prestigious organization in Pakistan. He is also a Country ambassador of Dspace Institutional Repository for Pakistan. Hs successfully implement koha ILS in more than 25 prestigious organizations i.e. Bahria University Libraries, Pakistan Institute of parliamentary Services (PIPS), Agriculture University Peshawar, Higher Education Commission Library Islamabad, Sindh Madras -tul-Islam University, Lawrence College Murree, Pakistan Ordinance Factory Wah (POF) and many others. He also help different organization while implanting koha in different organization i.e NUST, GCU, University of Peshawar, Islamia College Peshawar, University of Karachi Central Library, and many other prestigious organization of Pakistan. His expertises include Linux, Peon Source Software, Dspace Koha, data migration, and word press software’s. He also developed a custom live DVD (LIBSOL) for Koha and Dspace software for those who wish to implement koha and Dsapce in their respective organization.
